The Solar Saturn 1100 hp gas turbine engine, produced in a single shaft engine for constant speed and a two shaft engine for variable output speed and torque capabilities, has many qualities superior to the usual reciprocating engine.Maintenance costs in the earthmoving industry have not yet been established as gas turbine engines are just being introduced. With considerably fewer moving parts, they are easier to maintain and have appreciably less down time; their size is about one fifth that of a comparable diesel engine. The author believes future applications of gas turbine power in construction and mining industries will include power for equipment such as scrapers, loaders, rippers, dozers, slip-form machines, remote electric shovels, and portable power packages, they will probably also be used by railroad and mining companies for main line, switch, and mining locomotives.
