The Institute for Internal Combustion Engines and Thermodynamics of the Technical University, Graz, has developed a method whereby a digitalized speed curve may be evaluated in terms of fuel consumption and emission of HC, CO and NO\dx using a computer program. The entire curve is divided into time elements which are characterized by speed and acceleration. Road gradients can be considered using the equivalent accelerations. The consumption and emission values needed for calculation were determined by measurements made on a certain number of vehicles on the test stand. The method was developed primarily for judging road networks. It may also be used to compare various test cycles mathematically.
