Research was needed to resolve questions regarding engine performance under rapid-starting conditions prior to the design of the final hydraulic rapid-start cranking system. Laboratory tests were conducted on a Boeing Model 502-2E engine uing a readily available impingement boost cranking system. These tests showed that rapid starting could be attained by applying high cranking torque without further engine modification, and provided data for the hydraulic system design. The hydraulic system proved capable of achieving the 3 sec start up goal and also of reliably starting the engine at temperatures as low as -65 F.
