To answer this question, it was first of all investigated in which way the parameters which have bearing on traffic ~ transport tasks and means ~ have changed in the past, and which changes have been forecasted for the future. In this context, particular emphasis has been placed on the positive achievements of traffic, but also on the negative side-effects and the significance the car has for the individual, for society and for economic prosperity. The result of the investigation shows that there are no new standards to be set for the motor vehicle of tomorrow. All the factors influencing transport will continue to be a question of scale and of emphasis, and it will constantly be necessary to reconcile requirements and responsibility. As the people of future generations will not be prepared to forego their desire for mobility nor to renounce the standard of living they have reached with the aid of the motor vehicle, and as there is no other means of improving mobility in sight, it will be a question of jointly finding ways and means to retain the individual's mobility provided by the car, and to contain the unavoidable negative side-effects of a constantly growing traffic volume
