There are many similarities in the characteristics of traffic flow between two adjacent intersections in congestion area. Various models have been made to determine the correlation of the intersections and the desirability for coordinated control. This paper proposes the definition of critical route, which determines the overall operation effect of the intersection group and is suitable for coordinated control due to its certain traffic characteristics. The primary objective of this study is to explore the critical routes of reticulate intersection group connected with an important traffic node and implement coordinated control for it to alleviate traffic congestion and improve traffic efficiency. An evaluation model including four indexes is established to find out the critical route. The CRITIC method, which is one of the objective weight determination methods, is introduced innovatively to determine the weight of each index. Then the score of each route is calculated and the route that ranking first is the critical one. In order to evaluate the validity of the selected critical route, a simulation experiment is used to verify the rationality of the results. VISSIM is used to simulate and evaluate the traffic performances before and after the coordinated control. The results of VISSIM simulation showed that the coordinated control for critical route can effectively enhance the overall operation benefit of the intersection group. Therefore, the study concludes that the evaluation model is reasonable and valid to find out the critical route, which could provide transportation agencies with a management strategy to alleviate congestion of the intersection group.
