Within the task of further developing high speed Diesel engines for high volume application in passenger cars, a range of three swept volume categories of direct injecting Diesel engines has been developed and built. One of the major objectives was to unify engines allowing flexible manufacturing on available facilities. The decision for the chosen combustion process was based on space restrictions and projected fuel consumption advantages. Bench and road test results serve as base to illustrate possible improvements defining also the requirements. the chances for a high volume production solution are discussed on the base of evaluating still existing problems and illustrating possible solutions. The possible realization of the direct injection combustion process is being visualized, the introduction estimated timewise, and the cost picture discussed in relation to the swirl chamber Diesel as well as the future gasoline engine genration. The development of direct injecting Diesel engines for passenger cars is a prerequisite to keep the traditional fuel economy advantages over the gasoline version if not risking the elimination of the Diesels in future passenger cars.
