The key way of energy saving is to optimize the operating range of the engine of a HEV (hybrid electric vehicle). An engine auxiliary control unit was developed with advanced embedded control system in this paper. It offers a control interface between the hybrid electric vehicle master control unit and the SI engine control unit. It can afford the function of engine direct start-stop, the transient torque and power control and the communication with the master control unit through SAE J1939 CAN protocol. The experiment result shows that the design of the engine control interface is reasonable, the error of engine torque is decreased and the response of engine direct start-stop is fast-paced. So the hardware and software design of the engine auxiliary control unit can meet the request of engine control for the hybrid electric vehicle.
