Before an engine leaves the manufacturing and/or assembly plant it must undergo different tests in order to control the quality of the engine. These tests are time consuming and also need a specialist worker who can identify anomalies in the engine, mainly through a very well trained “ear”.This paper shows the development and the application of a methodology which can be able to diminish the running-in period and to identify malfunctions related to the combustion process in a plant for the manufacturing of direct injection diesel engine. The method is based on the formulation of two submodels included in a model of the dynamic of the engine, where the crankshaft is assumed as rigid body. One of the submodels relates the instantaneous mechanical losses of the engine with design and operating parameters. The other submodel defines the burning rate through a Wiebe function which depends of six parameters that change with operating conditions. The method has been applied to three different engines models (one, two and four cylinders), and the results are encouraging.
