A brief history of the development of pile driving hammers is given. The operating cycles of open and closed cylinder designs and a new closed cylinder positive scavenging design of self-contained diesel pile hammers are discussed. The basic design factors of compression ratio, air-fuel ratio, pressure volume relationships, and combustion chamber design as used with the closed cylinder design are given. The basic theory of energy developed by the closed cylinder design is covered, along with a method of measuring the energy output and the use of horsepower as a method of rating.
