A formula is proposed to relate the power of a gas turbine engine to that of a piston engine so that gas turbine powered automobiles can race competitively with equal opportunity. A review of past and present formulas is used to stipulate modern requirements. The parameters are derived from a mathematical analysis of turbine principles and a statistical analysis of recent engine data gives the final relationship. Draft regulations are presented that can be adopted by Racing Authorities. The formula relates the high pressure nozzle area of a gas turbine engine to the cylinder capacity of a piston engine, including effect of turbine compressor pressure ratio. Stimulus of competition could make a new contribution to the practical application of the gas turbine to automotive vehicles.
