This paper presents the TECHNA, a concept car designed and built by the Ford Motor Company Product Development Group. The vehicle demonstrates a novel relationship between passenger accommodations and componentry, in response to anticipated or actual customer wants. The important features of the vehicle and their rationale will be described in detail. The vehicle design was started in 1965 and the build completed in 1967. Alternate solutions not reflected in the vehicle but considered during the design phase or subsequent to hardware evaluation will, in a few cases, be described. Finally, some public reactions to the TECHNA features will be summarized.Since many TECHNA features are wanted, the paper suggests, in conclusion, that their ultimate engineering solutions to be derived from this concept car experience, can become a reality in the future, if the reader, or other automotive engineers, continue to accept the challenge.
