This paper deals with the solution heat treatment of aluminum alloys as related to aircraft manufacture. By using liquid nitrogen as the quench medium during heat treating instead of water, a distortionless and residual-stress-free part can be produced. The process makes significant cost savings possible in the fabrication, tooling, design, and installation of aircraft and space vehicle components.
