From this first specification which resulted in the use of heavy duty diesel engine oil, engine performance has been recognized by the Navy as paramount in oil selection. Engine tests designed to evaluate such engine performance have been and will continue to be of primary importance to the procurement of diesel engine lubricating oils for Navy service. This paper outlines changes in engine test procedures dictated by continuing application of the above stated premise. Results from small and large engine tests of oils used by the Navy are shown together with some results from tests of high additive oils which might be applied to future needs as may be dictated by high output performance demands on Navy diesel engines.
