The Bay Area Rapid Transit system offers many innovations in rail transit. This paper describes the vehicle system which will soon be operating on aerial structures, subways, and surface tracks now under construction in the San Francisco area. The track is wide gage with continuously welded rails directly fastened to concrete. The 10-car, 700 ft long trains will be high performance with chopper controls and disc brakes. Power will be supplied from a 1000 V d-c contact rail fabricated of steel and aluminum. Train operation will be automatic to include train protection and line supervision. Cars will offer a marked advancement in styling, comfort, and interior appointments. Fares will be dependent upon the length of ride and will be vended and collected with newly developed automatic equipment. With first trains scheduled to operate in 1970, the BART system is expected to be a forerunner of mass transit programs in other urban areas.
