In order to increase the information density in complex display systems and to improve the flexibility of the electrode layout design multiplex addressing should be applied. Based on the analysis of the effects of parameters such as cell gap and optical anisotropy on the static electro-optical transfer characteristic of TN-cells, we present the results of our investigations concerning the spatial distribution of the contrast and the spectral composition of transmitted light in multiplex operation. With a set of optimal parameters we analyse the spatial distribution of the contrast between selected and non-selected elements. The effect of a limited spectral range of the illumination on the contrast, its spatial distribution and the change of the solid angle with acceptable contrast is shown.
