Abstract Temporal variations in the relative number of failed rocket launches in Russia (Soviet Union) and the United States have been compared to reveal that these variations are antipersistent. The accident rates of rocket and space equipment launches have been analyzed as a function of the level and phase of solar activity cycle. The relative number of failed launches in Russia (Soviet Union) and the United States for the growth phase of solar activity has been shown to exceed the number for the phase of solar activity decline, although no clear correlation between solar activity and the number of failed launches has been detected.
