In July 2016 ITE announced their commitment to aggressively address the growing transportation safety problem through the establishment of a Vision Zero initiative. Vision Zero's ultimate goal is zero traffic fatalities among all road users. According to the World Health Organization, traffic crashes claim 1.25 million lives annually and are the leading cause of death for individuals aged 15 to 29 years. In the US, National Highway Traffic Safety Administration data show a 7.7% increase in motor vehicle traffic deaths in 2015 with 35,200 fatalities. Preliminary estimates from 2016 show another significant increase in fatalities to more than 40,000 lives lost. They can and must do something about the tragic loss of lives occurring on their Nation's highways.
