Transportation network companies (TNC) use smartphone apps to connect travelers with a driver in his or her personal vehicle who is willing to provide transport for a fare. The growth of TNCs has led to concerns -- from users, drivers, competitors, regulators, and the TNCs themselves. This article explains the issues and describes some possible common sense approaches to TNC regulation. The advent of TNCs was not seen coming by most transportation professionals or government legislators, and the way in which TNCS will be more fully embraced and integrated into the transportation culture and regulatory structure is still not certain. What is more clear is that a variety of for-hire services will be around for a longtime. As this article has strived to show there is no reason that they should not all be subject to essentially the same degree of regulation to protect the interests of the traveling public. That is the fair way and it makes common sense.
