Questions on whether it is ethical for an employee to use company resources for individual or personal purposes and whether the personal use of these resources present unprofessional action as an agent of the firm are answered. It is not unethical to use company resources where the employer and employee are honest and in agreement with each other on the use and application. Many employers, especially government agencies, have policies regarding the personal use of company equipment. The company provides resources for expanded employee involvement but these resources must still be used in a professional manner which does not create legal liability. Company policies should address the limits on use of major company resources such as vehicles, equipment, and facilities, and whether employees have any expectation in the privacy of personal communications.
