The purpose of this study was to investigate the impact of radar speed signs in a university environment, placed for an extended period in an area frequented by law enforcement. The goal was to have an in-depth understanding of driver reaction to radar speed signs over an extended period of time. The study results indicate that most drivers (85.6%) reduced their speed when warned of a violation, regardless of the presence of law enforcement. Because the radar speed sign had been at the study location for more than 9 months, this study found different driver behaviors from previous work in different traffic environments. These findings suggest that the driver population on a university campus reacts uniquely to speed radar devices and that their effective lifespan at one location may be longer than in locations with commuter traffic. Contributing factors to this finding could be the frequent presence of law enforcement or the diverse driver population that travels on a university campus.
