Municipalities, communities, and neighborhoods face a variety of transportation issues, ranging from congestion management and safety to complete streets. The New Jersey Department of Transportation (NJDOT) recognizes the importance of addressing community transportation issues because they are often critical to mobility within the community itself, as well as within the transportation system as a whole. NJDOT's Community Transportation Planning Assistance program, formerly known as the Local Transportation Planning Assistance program, was established to assist communities with these very challenges by providing quality planning expertise for a range of local transportation problems and issues. Unlike traditional grant programs, communities access this assistance by submitting a transportation issue to the NJDOT, which then evaluates the problem in comparison to other potential program activities. The NJDOT team worked closely with project stakeholders to identify particular areas of concern, which yielded valuable information regarding where to target traffic-calming measures and safety enhancements.
