The world's largest customer for commercial satellite imagery is signaling a major shift in purchasing strategy that could pose a challenge to the incumbent supplier and benefit startup companies. The US National Geospatial Intelligence Agency (NGA) has been paying about $300 million a year to DigitalGlobe of Longmont CO for imagery under an annually-renewed contract called EnhancedView, which includes options that run through 2020. NGA also gets priority in decisions about where to point DigitalGlobe's satellites, and it directs some of the funds to help maintain ground stations for last data delivery.
