Security researchers already have demonstrated theoretical attacks on aircraft and aircraft systems, such as accessing flight control systems via the in-flight entertainment system. Rather than acknowledging the security gaps and developing a plan to fix them, regulators and airlines seem more intent on squelching the information. Nonetheless, many industries have come to realize that suppressing security research leads to less effective response and patching. Very simply, the reality of eventual public disclosure puts pressure on vendors to develop and deploy fixes. Here, Erin examines the threats targeting aviation.
