NASA's Galileo mission to Jupiter will consist of an orbiter and a probe, the probe to descend through and analyze the Jovian atmosphere. All power for the probe will be supplied by three battery modules containing a total of 39 D size Li/SO2 cells that will be required to retain capacity for the duration of the mission (over 50 months) and then provide current at 3 to 4 amperes for 48 minutes. The design, development, and testing of this battery are described herein.
