In-space construction of a photovoltaic solar power satellite that is 5 1/2 by 25 km in size and weighs 81,000 tons is discussed. One of the construction approaches being considered requires 1/8-size power collection satellite modules to be constructed in low earth orbit (LEO) and transported to geosynchronous orbit (GEO) using self-powered electric thrusters. At GEO, these 1/8-size modules are connected and the antenna is constructed and attached. This construction approach will require about 300 people at LEO and 380 people at GEO working 10 hour shifts for 90 day staytimes. This paper describes the construction operations and construction equipment. Also discussed are some of the human factors considerations.
