A study of the effectiveness of submarine diving trainers in developing Diving Officer basic skills during a five-week Submarine Officers Indoctrination Course was conducted at the U.S. Navy Submarine School in New London. A standard 15-minute exercise to serve as a standard performance measure was administered at the beginning of each of seven two-hour training sessions. Performance of 16 student crews was compared with performance of five experienced crews. The report discusses some of the problems involved in evaluating training devices within a school setting and suggests techniques for adjusting experimental methodology to overcome study design constraints.
