The Warner-Robins logistics Center has initiated a program to replace the current cockpit flight instruments with a new Control/Display System (CDS). The new CDS includes (1) Liquid Crystal Display (LCD) units for the presentation of electronic Primary Flight Display (PFD) and Secondary Flight Display (SFD) Formats and (2) the addition of a Display Avionics Management Unit (DAMU) for controlling primary flight and navigation functions. The Wright Laboratory Cockpit Integration Division has supported this upgrade program through a two-phase pilot-in-the-loop simulation evaluation effort. In Phase I, the PFD format and the DAMU were evaluated in part-task simulations. In Phase II, a full mission evaluation was conducted to verify that the Integrated system would support C-141 mission requirements. This report describes the methods and results of the full mission simulation. 12 pilots flew Airland and Station Keeping Equipment (SKE) Airdrop simulator missions with both the CDS and C-141 cockpit configurations. The missions were selected to be representative C-141 missions and to exercise the various CDS functions. Overall, performance data and questionnaire results showed that the CDS configuration supports C-141 instrument flying, navigation, and SKE functions 'as well or better' than the current C-141 configuration. However, several design refinements for the PFD, SFD and DAMU were identified and are recommended for incorporation into CDS configuration.
