The report defines new flight command functions and computations that can be mechanized in future integrated control data systems for improving the mission capability of advanced Air Force Vehicles. The study concentrates on the ground-to-air intercept mission, because mission analysis indicates a high degree of commonality between the flight command requirements for the 12 representative aircraft missions studied. Current flight control instrumentation and its use is studied in order to simplify the pilot's task. Detailed mechanization equations for horizontal and vertical navigation are derived along with the control logic for smooth transition between modes. Based on technology projections, preliminary mechanization concepts for future airborne digital systems are proposed. (Author)
