An introductory, single-degree-of-freedom experimental study of aircraft roll control was performed to demonstrate the feasibility of doing flying qualities research via direct manipulation of an aircraft's step response on a flight simulator. This is a very attractive approach for studying the flying qualities requirements of modern aircraft that will incorporate new and sophisticated digital fly-by-wire control schemes for coordinating all control forces to produce nonclassical response to pilot commands. Central to the work was the development of a digital simulation technique, based on the mathematical concept of convolution, that provides the means for easy manipulation of the simulated vehicle's step-response characteristics. Two experiments were performed that examined several basic characteristics of an aircraft's roll-rate step-response in a simulated tracking task. (Author)
