To determine the effectiveness of physical examinations of military aviators in detecting diseases and conditions in the various body systems, specifically unsuspected tumors, autopsy material from some 5,000 victims of fatal aircraft accidents was studied. The anatomic distribution of these unsuspected tumors was tabulated and revealed that, of 81 victims determined to be crewmembers, 22 (27%) had endocrine tumors and 20 (25%) had tumors of the genitourinary system. Though most of the tumors in the series are generally considered benign, a significant number (29, or 36%) were malignant by a liberal definition of the term. The results indicate that the endocrine system should receive additional attention in flight-physical examinations. They also suggest that a long-range program is needed to obtain further data on military aviation pilots in order to evaluate the effectiveness of periodic physical examinations in detecting diseases or abnormalities.
