The paper reports on the tank driver's ability to drive his vehicle using a monochrome video system as the only source of visual environmental information. In a number of pilot studies, drivers were allowed to influence factors such as camera position, field of view and monitor size. In the present study, two kinds of experimental tasks were carried out. In the first one, the driver reversed the vehicle through a number of narrow gates placed in an open field. The other task was intended to be more combat-like, and the driver reversed the vehicle as fast as possible from a firing position back to cover. In half the number of trials the commander verbally directed the driver and the driver did not use the backward looking video system. In the combat situation, the commander also had to perform other tasks than helping the driver in some trials. The results indicate some degradation in the ability to pass the narrow gates without help from the commander. However, this degradation did not influence the performance in the combat-like situation. The conclusion from this study is that the backward looking video system increased the drivers' ability to reverse the vehicle in a combat-like situation.
