The study presents results of an analysis of farm tractor-related work injury data collected using the National Safety Council's standardized forms and procedures in 35 state farm accident surveys. A total of 37,293 farms participated in these surveys and detailed information was recorded on 228 tractor-related work injury cases. Data were summarized regarding the farm, the injured person, the injury event, environmental conditions, location, activity and action of person involved, slope of terrain, and presence and usage of certain safety features such as rollover protective structures (ROPS) and seat belts. Emphasis in the study was given to constructing common or statistically significant tractor-related work injury scenarios identified from the type of accident, nature of injury, part of body, agency of accident, and activity. The scenarios were then examined to identify possible intervention techniques. Multi-dimensional crosstabulations and a computer program called TREESEARCH were used for most of the analysis. Accident types discussed extensively were overturn, power takeoff shaft (PTO) entanglement, and run over. A comprehensive literature review was used to summarize previous tractor accident research, and results from the current study were compared to those previously published.
