A control technology survey was conducted at the United Airlines maintenance facility (SIC-4582), San Francisco, California, in November 1983. The purpose of the visit was to explore the facility's use of high velocity low volume (HVLV) technology for dust control in the airline maintenance industry. The facility employed about 6000 workers including 22 in the carpentry panel shop, 50 in the plastics shop, 6 in the vacuum forming panel shop, and 11 in the bonding and trim shop. In these five shops, HVLV systems were installed. The design of the HVLV systems called for a vacuum capacity sufficient for 50 percent of the drops to be utilized at any time while maintaining a shroud velocity of 10000 feet per minute to assure effective capture. In practice, most HVLV tool shrouds had been removed by the workers because they interfered with the jobs.
