The problem of forecasting freight movement into the future is a complex combination of data management, demand and supply forecasting, and modeling the distribution of freight flow. In addition, the difficult task of developing software is necessary to support each of these areas. Each of these areas taken by itself is a difficult research area. However, over the last 6 years, the Freight Movement Model for the State of Oklahoma (FMM) project has tackled each of these problems and has successfully developed a software prototype that addresses data management, forecasting, and modeling the distribution of freight flow.
