North Carolina's 135 charter boats were surveyed during the 1978 fishing season, April through November, to gather information on catch and effort and profitability of the fishery. The fleet made 9,812 trips during the year: 8,449 trips trolling for pelagic fish, 1,188 bottom fishing for reef fish, 118 bottom fishing in estuaries, and 57 trips carrying scuba divers. A total of 1,849,726 pounds of fish representing 36 species were caught. Major species landed while trolling were king mackerel, bluefish, and dolphin.
