This paper presents a progress report on the activities associated with a Methanol Demonstration Program for Federal Vehicles being implemented by the US Department of Energy (DOE) at the instruction of the US Congress. The guidelines as offered by the Congress are discussed along with DOE's strategy for carrying out the project. A two-phase approach was adopted in order to expedite the acquisition of methanol-fueled vehicles. In the first phase, gasoline vehicles converted for state-of-the-art use of methanol have been used alongside analogous gasoline vehicles. In the second phase a minimum of 1000 methanol-fueled vehicles will be ordered from the US auto industry. (ERA citation 11:050272)
