The paper presents a logical approach to the reporting of factors affected in highway collisions. Utilizing the multidisciplinary approach, collisions involve humans (drivers, passengers, pedestrians), motor vehicles (automobiles, trucks, motorcycles, etc.) and the surrounding environment (including ambient conditions and the highway itself). Phases of collisions where research is conducted include pre-crash factors (accident avoidance), crash factors (injury prevention), and post-crash factors (severity reduction). The NHTSA (formerly NHSB) has developed a program matrix which logically categorizes these specific areas of study. This 9-cell matrix is discussed in detail including its utilization, arbitrary definitions of the collision phases, definitions of each of the cells, and examples of factors which apply to each cell. Finally, a pictorial representation for summarizing the paper, and to be utilized as a visual aid, is presented as an appendix. (Author)
