The circumstances and anatomic patterns of injuries in 223 fatal motorcycle accidents were examined. The victims were predominantly healthy young men on active military duty in the United States and abroad. The median age for the series was 22 years. The accidents occurred mostly during off-duty hours. The victim of the accident was the operator of the motorcycle in most cases. There was a fairly equal distribution between solitary motorcycle accidents and those involving a motorcycle and another vehicle. Chances of surviving motorcycle accidents may be enhanced if the potential operators are tested and licensed separately, laws on speeding and drinking are rigorously enforced, and the wearing of headgear and other protective gear is made mandatory.
