Two L/UHF-Band Dual Pencil Beam Radar Systems, designated AN/FPA-22(XW-1) and AN/FPA-23(XW-1), were developed and placed into operation on the White Sands Missile Range, New Mexico. The primary purpose of these radars is to gather data on radar signatures of targets under the Athena Program. The L-Band operates at 1200 to 1311 mc while the UHF-Band operates at 425 mc =5%. Instrumentation recording equipment is contained for acquiring permanent records as noted on oscilloscopes of target signatures. Correlation of the recordings with other missile range events is provided. Each radar installation is complete with dual frequency transmitter, dual frequency receiver, antenna, range interface equipment, and instrumentation recording equipment. The radars are not self-tracking but must be directed to the desired target by signals from other missile range radars or computers. Manual control of the antenna is also available. The radars are housed in equipment shelters provided specifically for that purpose. The site locations are near the terminal destination of the missile being tested. (Author)
