Continued urban growth and automobile use without a corresponding increase in highway transportation facilities has led to unprecedented levels of traffic congestion in many metropolitan areas. The paper explores three major issues relating to the transportation/land use problem: (1) the developing relationship between transportation and land use, (2) the problems of integrating transportation and land use with traditional planning frameworks and techniques, and (3) examples of what some regions of the country are doing to address public concerns about development-induced traffic growth.
