The ultimate objective of the program was the design and development of an inflatable lateral body support system. The program also included the design and development of a special test apparatus, configured to represent the salient features of a crew escape module, which could be used on the AMRL HYGE sled facility to test inflatable restraints in escape capsule lateral impact conditions. Design criteria were collected from airbag systems manufacturers and crash pulse and tolerance data were found from several sources. A stored gas, direct, and aspirated flow system was selected as the best for the tests to be conducted and the system was developed by Rocket Research Corporation, Redmond, Washington. Based upon existing crash pulse data, the same system should provide adequate capability to study inflatable restraint response and protection for light fixed-wing aircraft and fixed-wing transport crash pulses.
