The high performance demands of modern flight systems require the design of task-oriented flight control systems. In this contribution, several control law design techniques which can be applied to the design of linear flight controllers are reviewed. Typical considerations and constraints which have to be taken into account by the flight control designer are stated. Frequency domain and state-space based time domain design techniques are discussed with special regard to their facilities and limitations. The design of longitudinal flight controllers is treated as an example.
