The report examines the possibility of determining the scattering cross-section of a helicopter by scaling the parameters involved and making measurements on a laboratory sized model of the helicopter in question. The necessity arose due to the dangers caused by RF radiation from tropospheric communications transmissions being reflected by helicopters landing and taking-off from oil production platforms in the North Sea. A plastic model helicopter was made up and painted with silver conducting paint. With the aid of a standard scatterer (a metal sphere) figures for scattering cross-sections were obtained for many attitudes of the model. The tropospheric transmissions were simulated at microwave frequencies and a simple transmitter/receiver circuit completed the system. Despite not meeting all conditions required for an accurate electrical model it was found that such a method could reveal accurate results should these conditions be fulfilled.
