The purpose of this investigation was to perform a research program for the development, analytical verification, mockup evaluation, and comparison of designs for practical crashworthy forward-, aft-, and side-facing troop seating systems for U.S. Army helicopters. Tasks performed during the program included a literature survey, military organization survey, and questionnaire distribution to obtain data on existing seats, restraint systems, accommodation and human factors requirements, mathematical simulation of crash force attenuation, and energy attenuator development. These data were used in developing 19 crashworthy troop seat concepts and several restraint systems applicable to troop use.
