Commercial fiber/resin systems were evaluated to determine the feasibility of redesigning M60 Army tank torsion bars to utilize fiber-reinforced composite materials to achieve weight reduction while maintaining service life and reliability. An AS graphite composite torsion bar was designed which met design requirements and weighed 35.3 lb compared to the existing 105-lb steel torsion bar. (Author)
