It appears that the majority of the businesses along the old route of South Dakota Highway 37 in Tripp were affected positively or were unaffected after the opening of the bypass route. While research findings were that certain businesses and certain types of businesses were adversely affected by the use of the bypass route, the dollar volume of these few businesses is relatively small when compared to the total dollar volume of taxable retail sales and gross sales for the town as a whole. The loss by these few businesses is offset in the economic increases experienced by other types of businesses (such as those retailing non-durable goods). The existence and use of the bypass route eliminated much unnecessary traffic (vehicles making through trips) in the business district of Tripp. This decrease in traffic resulted in less traffic congestion and probably safer driving and parking conditions. According to the researcher these benefits have very likely spurred more trade within the town by the local clientele. The traffic volume into and out of Tripp increased between the years 1959 and 1967 which suggests that more people are intentionally entering Tripp, and very likely for the purpose of shopping or business.
