The results of an analytical and experimental investigation of the hovering dynamics of an AEROCRANE hybrid heavy lift vehicle are discussed and compared. Analytical representations of the hovering aerodynamics and equations of motion are developed and discussed. The experimental program, including flight test of a 0.107 scale Froude model, is discussed. Piloted and unpiloted analog computer simulations of the hovering dynamics are compared with flight test results. The influence of feedback stabilization is investigated and recommendations made for a stabilization system to improve the hovering operation by a remote pilot with limited motion cues. (Author)
