The design, construction, and testing of pulse laser equipment which can be used for range measurements to artificial earth satellites is discussed. The equipment consists of a giant pulse laser transmitter and electro-optical receiver of high sensitivity. An operator tracks the satellite visually by a high power telescope or a TV-camera. Transmitter and receiver are steered by an electro-hydraulic system. The transmitted laser pulses are reflected by retroreflectors fixed to the satellite and recorded by the receiving equipment on the ground. The range to the satellite can be determined from the time interval between the transmitted and the received pulses measured with the aid of a nanosecond counter. The Universal Time of the received pulses is determined by a rubidium clock. The laser station was calibrated with targets on the ground. First range measurements of satellites were successful.
