Globalization, international trade, and economic developments have led to an increasing volume of traffic by all modes of transport. Traffic at ports, airports, rail yards, and warehouse/distribution nodes contributes to congestion, environmental pollution, and traffic accidents and puts tremendous pressure on metropolitan areas to deal with such issues. Economic forecasts unanimously declare that transportation capacity needs must be predicted and addressed in order to keep pace with rising demand. An accurate understanding of traffic flows in the field is a prerequisite for proposing new solutions that would make existing transportation systems more efficient, especially in complex environments such as metropolitan areas. Major efforts have been invested in developing computation tools to model, simulate, and evaluate the behavior of traffic systems. The development of computational experiments for controlling, monitoring, and diagnosing transportation systems now often involves a multitude of software applications. Manual management of such computation processes requires domain scientists to know intricate details of multiple software platforms and data management systems, the input and output formats of a growing collection of applications, and the interactions of these components.
