This document presents a wind tunnel investigation of the air distrubances along the flight approach path behind aircraft carriers. The air wake behind a model of the proposed CVA 67 aircraft carrier with various deck and island modifications was surveyed in the wind tunnel. The deck modifications tested included several combinations of deck edge fillets in the region of the leading edge of the angled deck, and in the aft port region of the flight deck. Island configurations tested were the basic island with a flap and a simplified two-piece (slotted) building-block island with a flap. Tests were also conducted throughout a wide range of yaw angles other than the normal operating angles of 0 deg and 11 deg to investigate any significant changes in the wake characteristics, and to find an optimum yaw angle for minimum wake distrubance. The effect of simulated stack gas discharge was determined using a cold air jet from the stacks on the model. The use of a fillet increased dynamic pressure ratios on the approach path at an angle of yaw of 11 deg, but not at 0 deg. (Author)
